Our score is an editorial rating out of 10 (fit 35%, features 25%, build 20%, value 20%), not a customer rating. Method: https://coolsleeppicks.com/how-we-research#our-score Evaporative coolers only work where the air is dry, and that constraint should settle the purchase before a single spec gets compared, because these units cool by evaporating water into the airstream and in humid conditions they add moisture while dropping the temperature very little. Given dry air, the number that matters is airflow in CFM, which spans about 1300 on small units to 4800 on the largest portables, and it should be read alongside the stated coverage figure rather than a room size you guess at: makers pair 1300 CFM with roughly 500 square feet and 2100 CFM with around 700. Undersize the fan and you get a damp breeze instead of cooling. Tank capacity, listed between about 8 and 10.6 gallons, decides how often you refill, and an auto-fill or hose connection is what turns a large cooler from a chore into something you can leave running unattended; without it, plan on carrying water. Oscillation of around 120 degrees spreads the cooled air across a patio or workshop instead of one spot. A 24-hour timer is genuinely useful since these run during the hottest part of the day. Pad material and the number of fan modes are minor by comparison, and none of it works in a sealed room, because evaporative cooling needs an open window or door to carry the humid air away. ## Picks ### 1.
