Percale

Percale is a weave structure, not a fiber, made by passing threads over and under each other in a simple one-over-one pattern. That plain weave produces a matte, crisp sheet with a lighter hand-feel than weaves that pack more threads onto the surface.

Because the weave is open and the fabric is thin, air moves through percale sheets easily and they do not cling to the skin the way a heavier weave can. This is why percale is the usual recommendation for hot sleepers shopping by fabric structure rather than fiber type alone, and why organic cotton percale sheets are frequently marketed specifically for cooling.

A common point of confusion is assuming higher thread count automatically means a better percale sheet. Past a moderate range, thread count in percale mostly changes cost and feel, not coolness, and unusually high numbers can actually mean thinner threads packed differently or blended fibers. Checking fiber content alongside weave gives a clearer picture than thread count on its own.
