Down alternative

Synthetic fill, usually polyester, designed to mimic the loft of down feathers without holding as much body heat.

Down alternative fill is a synthetic material, most often a form of polyester, engineered to reproduce the light, lofty feel of natural down feathers without using feathers at all. It is used in comforters, pillows, and mattress toppers as a fill layer.

Compared with real down, down alternative fill generally sleeps a bit cooler because it does not trap heat as densely, and it is also a common choice for allergy-sensitive sleepers. That said, fill weight and TOG rating still matter more than the fill material alone, since a heavily filled down alternative comforter can sleep warmer than a lightly filled down one.

A frequent mix-up is assuming down alternative is automatically the cooling option compared to any down comforter, when in fact both fill types come in summer-weight and winter-weight versions. Checking the specific TOG rating or fill weight on a down alternative comforter, rather than relying on the fill type alone, gives a clearer sense of how warm it will actually sleep.
