Cross-ventilation
Airflow created by opening or fanning opposite sides of a room, which cools a bedroom far more effectively than a single fan alone.
Cross-ventilation is the movement of air through a space created when there are two openings, or two airflow sources, positioned on roughly opposite sides. Air enters from one side and exits from the other, pulling warm, stagnant air out rather than just stirring it in place.
In a bedroom this usually means opening windows on two walls, or positioning a fan to pull air in while another pushes stale air out, rather than pointing a single fan directly at the bed. A single fan mostly just moves the same warm air around the room, while true cross-ventilation actually exchanges it for cooler air from elsewhere in the home or outside.
The common mistake is assuming any fan placement counts as ventilation. Fan direction and window position both matter: a fan facing an open window pulls outside air in, while one facing away from any opening does much less. Combining fan placement with breathable bedding tends to make a bigger difference than upgrading either one alone, especially before considering a portable air conditioner.
