Duvet insert

A duvet insert is the filled layer that goes inside a duvet cover, similar to how a pillow form goes inside a pillowcase. It is sold separately from the decorative cover so the same insert can be swapped between different covers, or replaced on its own as it wears out.

For temperature, the insert is what actually matters, since the cover fabric has only a small effect compared with the fill type, fill weight, and TOG rating of the insert itself. Down, down alternative, and lighter cotton or lyocell-fill inserts are all available at various warmth levels, so two duvets that look identical from the outside can sleep very differently once you check the insert.

A common mistake is buying a new duvet cover expecting it to fix a duvet that already sleeps too warm, when the insert underneath is the actual source of the heat. Checking the insert's TOG rating and fill type, and considering a lighter summer-weight insert for warmer months, addresses the problem more directly than changing the cover alone.
