The most important principle is to create airflow across your body, not just near it. A fan aimed so that a gentle breeze passes over you as you lie in bed maximizes evaporative cooling, which is what actually makes you feel cooler. Position an oscillating fan so its sweep crosses the bed, or a fixed fan angled to move air over you without blasting directly at your face all night, which can dry out your eyes and throat. Even a light, steady movement of air over the skin feels dramatically cooler than still, humid air.
Window fans unlock a powerful technique when the outside air is cooler than the inside, which is usually the case at night. Place a fan in a window facing outward to push hot indoor air out, and if you have a second fan or window, set it up on the opposite side of the room facing inward to draw cooler outside air in. This creates a cross breeze that flushes the day's accumulated heat out of the room and replaces it with fresh, cooler air. Place a shallow bowl or tray of ice, or a frozen water bottle, directly in front of a fan so the airflow passes over the ice and picks up a cooler, slightly moist edge before reaching you. It is a modest, temporary effect rather than air conditioning, but on a hot night it can take the edge off, and it costs nothing beyond a bit of frozen water. Refresh the ice as it melts if you want to extend the effect.
Finally, think about timing and combining methods. Ventilate and run window fans hardest in the cooler evening and overnight hours, and close windows and curtains during the hot day to keep heat out. Use a fan alongside breathable bedding and a cooler room setup rather than as your only tool.
