Mattress and Bedding Size Chart

Published How we research

US mattress sizing looks simple until you try to buy sheets, a mattress protector, or a cooling topper from a brand that lists dimensions in centimeters or uses slightly different naming, and a mismatch of even a few centimeters means bedding that bunches, slides off, or never lies flat enough to feel cool against the skin. This chart lists every standard US mattress size in both units alongside the sheet size that actually fits it.

Standard US mattress sizes

Twin: 38 x 75 inches (96.5 x 190.5cm). The smallest standard size, common for children's rooms, single guest rooms, and bunk beds.

Twin XL: 38 x 80 inches (96.5 x 203cm). Same width as a standard twin but 5 inches longer, the common size for college dorm rooms and taller sleepers who want a single bed.

Full (also called Double): 54 x 75 inches (137 x 190.5cm). Wider than a twin but the same length, a common size for guest rooms and smaller primary bedrooms.

Queen: 60 x 80 inches (152 x 203cm). The most popular mattress size in the US, offering meaningfully more width and length than a full for couples or anyone who wants more room to move.

King (also called Eastern King): 76 x 80 inches (193 x 203cm). Same length as a queen but substantially wider, popular for couples who want individual space.

California King: 72 x 84 inches (183 x 213.5cm). Narrower than a standard king but longer, popular with taller sleepers who need extra leg room.

Matching sheet sizes to your mattress

Flat and fitted sheets are generally sized larger than the mattress itself to accommodate pocket depth, so a fitted sheet labeled for your mattress size should also list a pocket depth, commonly 12-16 inches for standard mattresses and 16-22 inches for deeper or pillow-top mattresses. Buying a fitted sheet with too shallow a pocket for a thick mattress is one of the most common bedding fit complaints, since the sheet corners pop off repeatedly through the night.

King and California King sheet sets are not interchangeable despite the similar name, since a California King fitted sheet is longer and narrower than a standard King fitted sheet by several inches in each dimension, and using the wrong one leaves either excess loose fabric or a sheet that will not stretch to fit the corners.

Duvet, comforter, and topper sizing

Duvets and comforters are generally sized a few inches larger than the mattress on each side to allow for drape over the edges, so a queen duvet at roughly 90 x 90 inches (229 x 229cm) comfortably covers a 60 x 80 inch mattress with overhang on both long sides. A duvet sized exactly to the mattress dimensions will look skimpy and slide off-center easily during the night.

Cooling mattress toppers and protectors should match the mattress dimensions closely, unlike sheets and duvets, since a topper that overhangs or falls short creates gaps that trap heat unevenly or bunch under a fitted sheet. Always check whether a cooling topper is sold by mattress size name or by exact dimensions, since some brands round sizes slightly differently than the standard chart above.
