BTU
British Thermal Units, the unit used to rate how much heat a portable air conditioner or fan-based cooler can remove per hour.
BTU stands for British Thermal Unit, a measure of energy that, in cooling appliances, describes how much heat a unit can remove from a room in an hour. Portable and window air conditioners are rated in BTUs, and the number is one of the main specs to check before buying one for a bedroom.
A unit with too low a BTU rating for the room size will run constantly without ever fully cooling the space, while one rated far above what the room needs can cycle on and off quickly and cool unevenly. Bedroom size, ceiling height, window exposure, and how many people sleep in the room all affect which BTU rating actually works well in practice.
A common mistake is choosing an air conditioner based on price or brand alone and skipping the BTU calculation, then being disappointed when a small unit cannot keep up with a larger or sun-facing bedroom. Using a BTU calculator with actual room dimensions before buying avoids this, and is worth doing before assuming a portable AC has failed.
