A laminated barrier keeps liquid out of the mattress and is the practical answer to nappy leaks, but it is a sealed layer that blocks airflow and traps warmth against the back. Pads sold as breathable use an open spacer structure or a perforated barrier so air can move, which sleeps cooler and dries faster while stopping less liquid. Fitted skirt pads are far easier to swap at three in the morning than flat pads that need tucking under the mattress. Sleep-surface fabric is worth reading too, as bamboo-derived viscose and quilted cotton feel cooler to the touch than brushed polyester. Noise is the underrated criterion, since a crackly vinyl-backed pad wakes a light sleeper every time they roll over. Buy two so one can always be in the wash.
